Laugh and the World Laughs with You: An Attachment Perspective on the Meaning of Laughter in Psychotherapy
نویسنده
چکیده
From infancy laughter is a right-brain-to-rightbrain attachment behavior mutually aroused and regulated within the caregiver–infant partnership. Laughter continues to be attachment behavior throughout life with potential for enhancing attachment bonds or for defending against them. Laughter in psychotherapy has primarily been viewed as a discharge phenomena with typical interpretations focused on the humor that elicits the laughter rather than the meaning of the behavior itself. Viewing laughter as attachment behavior in psychotherapy provides the clinician with valuable insight about its meaning and management within the therapeutic relationship.

The role of laughter during psychotherapy is poorly understood. This study examined 10 unique sessions of psychodynamic psychotherapy with digital videotape and simultaneous measures of skin conductivity (SC) from patients and therapists. Independent observers coded laugh episodes using published criteria. Observers identified 167 laugh responses. Of the 119 patient laughs, 91 (76.5%) were pati...
متن کاملEnabling a virtual agent to join in laughing with a conversational partner using a similarity-driven audiovisual laughter animation
The AVLaughterCycle project aims at developing an audiovisual laughing machine, able to detect and respond to user’s laughs. Laughter is an important cue to reinforce the engagement in humancomputer interactions. As a first step toward this goal, we have implemented a system capable of recording the laugh of a user and responding to it with a similar laugh. The output laugh is automatically sel...

This paper reports on the acoustic features of the laugh-speech continuum, specifically dealing with formant space, pitch range and voice quality. Results show that laugh vowels are generally reduced and there is a tendency for them to be produced more back and low in the vowel space when compared to speech. The large open quotient and shallow spectral tilt measurements for laughter is consiste...
متن کاملLaughter Annotations in Conversational Speech Corpora – Possibilities and Limitations for Phonetic Analysis
Existing laughter annotations provided with several publicly available conversational speech corpora (both multiparty and dyadic conversations) were investigated and compared. We discuss the possibilities and limitations of these rather coarse and shallow laughter annotations. There are definition issues to be considered with respect to speech-laughs and the segmentation of laughs: what constit...
